Early stereocard pre 1882 of Charing Cross station opened in 1864 by the South Eastern Railway. A cdv of Ancaster railway station in Lincolnshire taken by Alfred Arnell of Scarborough but by 1891 was living in the village of Heckington near Sleaford, Lincolnshire practising as a photographer. By 1901 he had moved up to Pontefract. On the 1891 census the station master at Ancaster was a William Matthew Dawson who lived in the station house with his wife Annie and son James with Lily the servant. The signalman at Ancaster living next door was a William brown.Living in the village we find a Henry Thomas Ward, railway porter aged 27. SRL No 303

After the takeover most of the bridges required rebuilding to improve clearance for the large and heavier locomotives and rolling stock.
