Looking towards Altrincham & Bowdon railway station sometime between 1930-50. Altrincham North signal box on the left a LNWR Type 5 design with 72 levers. Seen here before the corner of the box was altered to allow a clear view of the busy Stockport Road level crossing which the box controlled. Opened in 1908 the box survived until closure in 1991. The station was opened in 1881 on the site of a former station by the Manchester, South Junction & Altrincham Railway. One of a set of glass negatives taken by amateur photographer George John Drysdale who came from the Seaforth area of Liverpool. Born in 1874 in Liverpool, never married and worked as a telephone electrician for the GPO, died in 1948. He was not just interested in the railway but living in Liverpool had the docks and took some superb plates of the RMS Mauretania. George John Drysdale/SRL No 202
